A real political bombshell just a few months before the elections in midterm the draft of the US Supreme Court ruling, fortunately leaked, that would make abortion illegal in the United Statesoverturning the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that made it legal in 1973.
In the meantime it is a draft, the final ruling is expected in June. It is also a question of understanding whose 'little hand' it was that let it out, and why.
It could have been one of the conservative judges (Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, who allegedly drafted the sentence, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett) to overcome possible internal resistance: it seems that not everyone among the Republicans would be equally convinced of the advisability of dropping Roe v. Wade. Vice versa the draft may have been circulated by one of the liberal judges to trigger protest reactions in advance we are seeing in these hours.
If the judgment confirms the content of the draft it will be a real catastrophe for American women: Many states, such as Texas, have already severely restricted access to abortion, and it would be an avalanche in Republican-ruled territories. In fact, abortion could become a crime in most of the United States, remaining legal only in a few states, such as California, and giving rise to a veritable 'abortion tourism'.
However, the general political scenario should not be forgotten -the elections of midterm in November - and the fact that Biden is seen as seriously disgraced. A sentence such as this would greatly extend his life, so much so that Biden has already begun to ride the wave by inviting support for the candidates pro choice. It must also be said that according to all surveys 7 out of 10 American citizens are in favour of legal abortion.
Why should the Republicans jeopardise a victory they already have in their pockets by alienating the support of the vast majority of American women?
The story is far from clear.
Some liberal commentators, Finally, they are launching into daring comparisons, by arguing that this judgment is fully part of the anti-gender counter-attack underway, and they also blame gender-critical feminists for this. like Abigail Shrier, on the frontline against the transitions of girls and boys.
This reading must be strongly rejected.
